How can we keep ourselves and loved ones safe?

With the recent tragic murder of an Arkansas Realtor, Beverly Carter, my thoughts turn toward the real estate industry as a whole and how do we keep ourselves safe?

As realtors, we work in a solitary atmosphere most of the time - seems like a vulnerable position.
Often, we are running out to show a property without much knowledge of the buyer.

I was always taught CITO. It stands for Come Into The Office. Have the potential buyer/seller come in to the office.
This truly is the safest for all parties, both the agent and buyers. Get to know each other before you head out to view houses together!
A realtor should, at the least, get a photocopy of the drivers license and ask for pre approval letter from lender. If the person is a legitimate buyer, they will be happy to provide the information.
As buyers, when you are asked to provide information such as an approval letter, please do not be insulted.  This is often a way for us to gauge our safety.
I always text the address where I’m going to be located for either showing or open house to my husband. So did Beverly.
We need to be more thoughtful as a society. Buyers wanting immediate attention and agents wanting to provide immediate attention can be a dangerous habit to get into. Think before heading out.

R Associates Quick Tips:

  • Meet at the office ahead of time
  • Get copy of driver’s license and pre-approval letter
  • Let someone know where you will be and when you are expected to be finished
  • Show up early to the property and have it ready
  • Always let them walk in front of you
  • Carry pepper spray
  • Be aware of your surroundings and know where all exits are
  • Have a code word/phrase with your team or a family member that you can call or text if you have a bad feeling
  • If possible, take another agent with you

What are some of your safety tips as realtors or buyers?
